About eClear
Our company was established in February 2020 as a wholly owned subsidiary of enechain Corporation with the aim of providing credit risk hedging solutions for wholesale electricity transactions. In May 2022, we changed our name to "eClear Corporation" and expanded our services by introducing an insurance-based scheme. As a result, we now provide settlement services for wholesale electricity transactions to more than 50 power companies, including major utilities that were previously dominant in each region of Japan. Furthermore, in September 2024, we formed a capital alliance with MUFG Bank, Ltd., establishing a joint venture with enechain holding a 51% stake and MUFG Bank holding a 49% stake, thereby enhancing our ability to offer more advanced functionalities.
Challenges Identified by eClear
Since the full liberalization of the electricity retail market in 2016, wholesale electricity market participants have faced increasing demands to secure better prices—power generators seek higher prices for their electricity sales, while electricity retailers aim for lower procurement costs. In this evolving market environment, forward transactions (physical transactions) and futures transactions (derivative transactions) have become more active, contributing to increased market liquidity.
These transactions offer various benefits. Electricity retailers can mitigate procurement cost volatility, while power generators can reduce the risks associated with fluctuating selling prices. Additionally, stable financial planning fosters investment in clean energy, and the redistribution of surplus electricity is expected to contribute to reducing overall fuel consumption in society.
However, despite the increasing transaction volume, many challenges remain. In forward transactions, there is a growing need for credit risk management of counterparties, yet no established clearing function exists to mitigate counterparty bankruptcy risk. In futures transactions, multiple exchanges provide clearing functions for standardized products, but the operational burden of margin management remains high, posing significant hurdles for many companies in the industry.
eClear's Solutions
eClear addresses these challenges by offering a comprehensive settlement solution that facilitates credit risk clearing in forward transactions and reduces the operational burden of margin management in futures transactions. By opening an eClear account, users can mitigate credit risks associated with forward transaction counterparties and resolve challenges related to margin management in futures transactions. As a result, the majority of bids and offers obtained through intermediaries and transaction matching platforms become "tradeable," allowing users to engage in more competitive transactions. Moreover, users are relieved from previously cumbersome administrative tasks, thereby improving operational efficiency.
eClear’s Value Proposition
eClear provides settlement functions for both forward and futures transactions. Unlike trading-focused financial institutions that quote their own prices, we aim to provide a means for customers to efficiently trade with multiple counterparties. eClear itself does not hold trading positions and does not engage in pricing activities. Additionally, customers' transaction information is strictly managed, ensuring that users engaged in trading as their core operation can use our services with confidence.
eClear enhances the convenience and liquidity of transactions in the electricity market, contributing to overall market efficiency and transparency. We remain committed to supporting our customers' business growth and fostering the healthy development of the market, working towards the realization of a sustainable energy society.
